You can usually treat small boils on your own at home. Small boils that can be treated at home can take anywhere from 2 days to 3 weeks to heal. While treating a boil at home and being patient is usually enough, there are some situations in which you may want to seek medical attention.
But you can prevent a boil from spreading to other parts of your body and to other people. Avoid squeezing the boil or trying to drain it yourself. Doing so could lead the infection to spread or possibly cause a secondary infection of the boil.
Once it dries, rinse it off and repeat later that day. It restores your skin’s natural pH and reduces the risk of scarring after healing. This treatment method can be used either topically or orally. Dip a clean washcloth into tepid raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar.
Cast out boils with castor oil
Carbuncles require medical treatment to prevent or manage complications, promote healing, and minimize scarring. Contact your doctor if you have a boil or boils that have persisted for more than a few days. Onions are well known for their antiseptic properties which can effectively act as an antimicrobial irritant.
A warm compress is by far the best cure for boils that requires no ingredients except water and salt and has absolutely no side-effects. Make sure to compress the boil when it forms a prominent head so that it will burst with repeated soakings. Add 2 teaspoon of turmeric powder to 1 cup of lukewarm water, mix well and drink daily in order to clear the boil. You can also make a topical paste by mixing turmeric powder with water to form a thick paste and smear it on the boil and the surrounding skin.
Medical Treatments for Carbuncles
If a boil gets worse after draining or does not improve on its own with basic home care after a week or more, a doctor should rule out infection. Fresh garlic can be pressed and the extracted juice applied to boil or wound for 10 to 30 minutes once or twice daily. With regular application of a warm compress, the boil should eventually burst open and drain fully. While it is never recommended to attempt to open or drain a boil at home, there are several relatively simple ways to help speed up the process naturally. Most boils do not lead to scarring unless forced open. Listerine was invented in 1879 and was originally formulated as a surgical antiseptic.
Your doctor will use sterile equipment, so don’t attempt to do this at home. If the boil bursts, clean the area thoroughly and apply an antibiotic ointment like combined bacitracin, neomycin, and polymyxin B . Then, cover with a sterile gauze or adhesive bandage. Keep the area clean, and change the dressing daily. A boil in the vaginal area can be especially painful. These pus-filled bumps are benign and rarely serious, but they can grow quite large.
Useful Home Remedies to Cure Boils and Carbuncles on the Body
Cover the area with cotton and bandage and repeat the process everyday till you see improvement. Parsley or cilantro is yet another useful herb that is loaded with amazing benefits for hair and skin. When applied regularly, it also soothes inflammation and skin irritation caused by boils. Indian Lilac is known for it’s anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties. It is effective for treating boils and providing relief in the pain.
List all your signs and symptoms and when they first occurred. Record how long the bumps lasted and if any recurred. Make a list of all medications — including vitamins, herbs and over-the-counter drugs — that you're taking. Even better, take the original bottles and a list of the doses and directions.

Carbuncles can also appear as a cluster of boils. Rather than a single, large boil, carbuncles can take the appearance of several, separate boils on the surface of your skin. Usually, it takes a few days for them to develop.
Before you touch the boil or surrounding area, wash your hands with antibacterial soap and warm water. This will help keep you from introducing new bacteria to the boil. Wash your hands after you’ve touched the boil, too, to prevent spreading the infection to other areas of your body. Place a clean, warm, wet washcloth over the boil, and leave it there for 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat this process three or four times a day until the boil is gone.

Put 1 teaspoon of turmeric in a clean bowl and mix in a few drops of castor oil to make a thick paste. If you’ve been in contact with someone who has a boil, shared clothes, or reused a towel, you may be more likely to develop a boil.
